Steve Slusher — 15s Black Head Coach
I'm Steve Slusher, and I've got 15s at Elite this season. There's one skill I never get bored of, and it's team offense. I love the moment six players finally start moving like one. Serve receive runs a close second. I coach the game as it's played right now — the speed, the systems, and the way this generation of athletes actually learns. My playing days gave me the fundamentals. The hours I've put into the coaching side are what turn them into teaching.
My Coaching style is direct with these boys. They should always know where they stand and where they can improve. Errors in a tight set get handled the same way every time. I ask what they saw. Most of the time they already know. Don’t expect players to be pulled from a set for an error or two. Do expect it if players are not hustling, not listening, or being a poor teammate. If you watch a session of mine, it'll be high volume, with a lot of contacts per athlete and split between position work and full-team play.
The honest version of who shouldn't sign up: anyone who thinks minutes come with the club fee. Minutes are earned in practice — and I'll tell an athlete exactly what to do to get them. Player cannot control their height, but can control their attitude and effort. From my last few years it’s worth knowing I coached a 13U club team to a 1st Place finish (Flight 2 Club Division) and most recently led the Lebanon HS team to its best finish since the sport was restarted 5 years ago.
I believe mastery of the small things can lead to much bigger outcomes. Feet matter, inches matter, reps matter. Proper footwork will lead to accurate execution. Reps lead to precision. Together they lead to some great volleyball!
